Bob Marley Museum

Music History · 56 Hope Road, Kingston

Rating: 4.7 / 5

The most important music pilgrimage site in the Caribbean, set at 56 Hope Road in uptown Kingston in the Georgian house Bob Marley bought in 1975 and lived in until his death in 1981. The house doubled as the headquarters of Tuff Gong and as the scene of the December 1976 assassination attempt on Marley's life, and the bullet holes in the walls are still visible on the guided tour. Exhibits include Marley's bedroom, his personal record collection, gold discs, stage clothes, and the kitchen where he famously cooked Ital food. Open Monday to Saturday.

What it is

The Bob Marley Museum is the King of Reggae's former home and studio at 56 Hope Road in Kingston. Marley lived here from 1975 until his death in 1981. The Tuff Gong studio building on the property recorded much of his late catalogue. The museum opened in 1986, run by the Marley family.

What to see

Guided tours walk through the rooms exactly as Marley left them — his bedroom, kitchen, the rehearsal room, the bullet holes from the 1976 assassination attempt, and the gardens. The original Tuff Gong studio is on site. There's a gift shop and on-site theatre.

Practical info

About culture in Jamaica

Jamaica is a cultural superpower — birthplace of reggae, dancehall, ska, rocksteady, and dub. The Bob Marley Museum in Kingston and Bob Marley Mausoleum at Nine Mile in St. Ann are pilgrimages for fans worldwide. Devon House National Heritage Site, Trench Town Culture Yard, and the National Gallery tell the Kingston story. Up north, Rose Hall Great House, Greenwood Great House, and Falmouth's Georgian streets reveal the plantation past. Port Royal, the old pirate capital, sits at the end of the Palisadoes peninsula.
