Know Your Rights — If You're Arrested

Public Information

If you are arrested in Jamaica, know your rights. You have the right to remain silent — anything you say can be used against you. You have the right to a lawyer, including a free one through the Legal Aid Council if you cannot afford one (876-948-7275). You must be told the reason for your arrest. You are entitled to make a phone call and, if a foreign national, to have your embassy notified. Do not sign any statement without your lawyer present. These protections are grounded in the Jamaican Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.
