Black River Safari

Inland Fishing · St. Elizabeth

Rating: 4.5 / 5

The lower Black River, before it empties into the Caribbean at Black River town in St. Elizabeth, is a brackish wetland that holds tarpon, snook and snapper alongside its famous resident American crocodiles. A small number of local guides combine light-tackle and fly fishing with the traditional two-hour wildlife safari, making for an unusual inland charter option. The best conditions are generally in the dry season (December to April) when water levels are lower and sight fishing becomes possible along the mangrove edges.

About fishing in Jamaica

Jamaica's deep waters hold blue marlin, wahoo, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna. The Port Antonio Marlin Tournament every October is one of the longest-running deep-sea events in the Caribbean. Charter boats run daily out of Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. The Black River Safari in St. Elizabeth is the place for crocodile spotting and inland fishing. The fish markets at Old Harbour and Whitehouse sell the daily catch.
