Old Harbour Fish Market

Fish Market · St. Catherine

Rating: 4.4 / 5

Old Harbour Bay in St. Catherine is one of the largest working fishing beaches on Jamaica's south coast and the main wholesale supplier for Kingston's fishmongers and kitchens. The beach comes alive in the early morning as the night boats return with snapper, parrotfish, doctorfish, kingfish, lobster and shrimp, all sold straight from the catch. There are scales, coolers and rough-and-ready jerk stands along the beach. Not a tourist attraction — this is a commercial fish market — but fascinating for anyone who wants to see Jamaica's fishing economy at full tilt.

About fishing in Jamaica

Jamaica's deep waters hold blue marlin, wahoo, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna. The Port Antonio Marlin Tournament every October is one of the longest-running deep-sea events in the Caribbean. Charter boats run daily out of Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. The Black River Safari in St. Elizabeth is the place for crocodile spotting and inland fishing. The fish markets at Old Harbour and Whitehouse sell the daily catch.
