Sav-la-Mar Fishing Co-operative

Fishing Co-op · Westmoreland

Rating: 4.4 / 5

The Sav-la-Mar fishing co-operative is the commercial fishing hub of Westmoreland parish, headquartered at the Savanna-la-Mar waterfront. Member boats supply much of the fresh fish, lobster, shrimp and conch sold into Negril's restaurant and hotel trade, along with the western end of the Montego Bay market. A visit shows the working end of the Jamaican fishing economy — unloading boats, scales, ice and wholesale buyers — rather than a tourist attraction, but it is fascinating for anyone interested in how the coast actually feeds itself.

About fishing in Jamaica

Jamaica's deep waters hold blue marlin, wahoo, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna. The Port Antonio Marlin Tournament every October is one of the longest-running deep-sea events in the Caribbean. Charter boats run daily out of Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. The Black River Safari in St. Elizabeth is the place for crocodile spotting and inland fishing. The fish markets at Old Harbour and Whitehouse sell the daily catch.
