Whitehouse Fishing Co-op

Fishing Co-op · Westmoreland

Rating: 4.4 / 5

The Whitehouse fishing co-operative, based in the busy south-coast fishing village of Whitehouse, Westmoreland, is one of the largest working commercial fisheries on that side of the island. Members' boats land fresh fish, lobster, shrimp and conch throughout the day, selling both wholesale and directly to the public along the beach. The co-op supplies a significant share of the local hotel and restaurant trade in Westmoreland and Negril, and the beach itself is a lively introduction to rural Jamaican coastal life.

About fishing in Jamaica

Jamaica's deep waters hold blue marlin, wahoo, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna. The Port Antonio Marlin Tournament every October is one of the longest-running deep-sea events in the Caribbean. Charter boats run daily out of Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. The Black River Safari in St. Elizabeth is the place for crocodile spotting and inland fishing. The fish markets at Old Harbour and Whitehouse sell the daily catch.
