Scotchies

Jerk Centre · Montego Bay

Rating: 4.7 / 5

Arguably the most famous jerk restaurant in the world, Scotchies on the Falmouth Main Road just east of Montego Bay is a bucket-list stop for any visitor to Jamaica. Cooks work over open pits piled with pimento (allspice) wood, smoking chicken, pork and fish to order while guests sit at rough-hewn picnic tables in an open-air, thatch-roofed yard. The seasoning is unmistakable — hot, smoky, herbal — and is usually served with festival (fried cornmeal dumplings), roast breadfruit, rice and peas, and an ice-cold Red Stripe. Cash and Jamaican cards accepted; busiest at lunch. Open daily 11am to 11pm.

About restaurants in Jamaica

Jamaican food is one of the most influential cuisines in the world — jerk, ackee and saltfish, curry goat, oxtail, escovitch, ital, festivals, and bammy. Scotchies in Montego Bay set the global standard for jerk; Boston Bay in Portland is where it was invented. Devon House in Kingston serves the world's best ice cream alongside legendary Norma's. Treasure Beach has Jakes and Jack Sprat. From cliff-edge Rockhouse in Negril to Houseboat Grill in Mobay, Jamaica's dining scene blends roadside perfection with world-class fine dining.
