Frenchman's Cove

East Coast · Port Antonio

Rating: 4.9 / 5

Frenchman's Cove sits on the Portland coast just east of Port Antonio and is routinely listed among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. A small crescent of powder-white sand is hemmed in by cliffs and jungle, and a cold freshwater river — the Winifred — empties straight across the sand into the sea, giving bathers the unique sensation of switching between cool spring water and warm Caribbean in a single step. The beach is part of Frenchman's Cove Resort; a day pass covers loungers, bar service and the changing rooms. Bamboo rafts and kayaks are available. The vibe is calm, lush and cinematic.

About the cove

Frenchman's Cove is a small crescent beach in Portland parish on Jamaica's north-east coast, considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. The unique feature: a freshwater river (the Cove River) flows out of the rainforest directly into the saltwater at the beach, creating a brackish pool where you can swim in both fresh and salt water at once.

What to do

Swim in the cove or the freshwater river, walk the rope swing, sunbathe on the protected sand, eat at the beach restaurant. The Frenchman's Cove Resort owns the property; day visitors pay a small entrance fee that includes loungers.

Practical info

About 5 miles east of Port Antonio on the north-east coast. Day entry fee for non-guests. Open daily. About 2 hours from Ocho Rios by car.

About beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica is home to over 80 beaches strung along three distinct coastlines. The north coast — anchored by Negril's Seven Mile Beach, Doctor's Cave in Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios — is the world-famous resort strip with calm turquoise water. The east coast around Port Antonio hides the most dramatic coves: Frenchman's Cove, Winnifred Beach, and Boston Bay. The south coast offers laid-back local favourites like Treasure Beach, Bluefields, and Hellshire. From the cliff-jumping spot at Rick's Café to the secluded sands of Lime Cay, this guide covers every beach worth visiting.
