Winnifred Beach

East Coast · Portland

Rating: 4.7 / 5

Winnifred Beach in Fairy Hill, Portland, is Jamaica's best-loved free public beach and a genuine Portland institution. Protected by reef, it has gentle turquoise water, good snorkelling close to shore, hammocks strung between seagrape trees, and a line of local stalls serving jerk chicken, steamed fish, festival and cold Red Stripe. Locals successfully fought off large-scale development of the site, and the beach is now held for the community by the Winnifred Beach Benevolent Association. There are no entry gates, no resorts and no loungers for hire — just a stretch of sand that feels exactly as it has for decades.

About beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica is home to over 80 beaches strung along three distinct coastlines. The north coast — anchored by Negril's Seven Mile Beach, Doctor's Cave in Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios — is the world-famous resort strip with calm turquoise water. The east coast around Port Antonio hides the most dramatic coves: Frenchman's Cove, Winnifred Beach, and Boston Bay. The south coast offers laid-back local favourites like Treasure Beach, Bluefields, and Hellshire. From the cliff-jumping spot at Rick's Café to the secluded sands of Lime Cay, this guide covers every beach worth visiting.
