Blue Lagoon

East Coast · Portland

Rating: 4.8 / 5

The Blue Lagoon sits just east of Port Antonio in Portland, where a deep underwater spring — reported to reach about 180 feet — meets the Caribbean. The mixing of cold fresh water and warm salt water produces the startling cobalt-to-turquoise colour that gave the lagoon its name and made it famous in the 1980 Brooke Shields film. Visitors swim off small platforms, float on bamboo rafts and snorkel the mangrove edges; a small bar and restaurant sit on the shore. There is no swimming beach here in the traditional sense — it is an experience swim in one of the most photogenic spots in the Caribbean.

About beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica is home to over 80 beaches strung along three distinct coastlines. The north coast — anchored by Negril's Seven Mile Beach, Doctor's Cave in Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios — is the world-famous resort strip with calm turquoise water. The east coast around Port Antonio hides the most dramatic coves: Frenchman's Cove, Winnifred Beach, and Boston Bay. The south coast offers laid-back local favourites like Treasure Beach, Bluefields, and Hellshire. From the cliff-jumping spot at Rick's Café to the secluded sands of Lime Cay, this guide covers every beach worth visiting.
