Long Bay Beach

East Coast · Portland

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Long Bay, on Portland's east coast south of Port Antonio, is a mile-long stretch of sand that is widely considered the most consistent surf beach in Jamaica. The Atlantic swell produces beginner-friendly, shoulder-high waves for most of the year, and a small surf community runs lessons and board rental from the sand. There are no big resorts — just a handful of guesthouses, rum bars and fish kitchens along the road behind the beach. Swimming can be rough when the surf is up, so check conditions. The feel is thoroughly local, jungle-backed and distinctly un-touristy.

About beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica is home to over 80 beaches strung along three distinct coastlines. The north coast — anchored by Negril's Seven Mile Beach, Doctor's Cave in Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios — is the world-famous resort strip with calm turquoise water. The east coast around Port Antonio hides the most dramatic coves: Frenchman's Cove, Winnifred Beach, and Boston Bay. The south coast offers laid-back local favourites like Treasure Beach, Bluefields, and Hellshire. From the cliff-jumping spot at Rick's Café to the secluded sands of Lime Cay, this guide covers every beach worth visiting.
