Accompong Maroon Festival

Heritage · January 6 · St. Elizabeth

Rating: 4.7 / 5

Every 6 January the Maroon town of Accompong in the St Elizabeth hills hosts its annual festival, marking the 1739 peace treaty between the Leeward Maroons led by Cudjoe and the British colonial authorities. The day features traditional abeng-horn signalling, drumming, dancing, ceremonies at sacred sites and a long-running daytime fete. It is the most authentic public window on surviving Maroon culture in Jamaica, and draws visitors, academics and returning members of the global Maroon diaspora.
